Crown and Bridges, Houston TX
Crowns and bridges can be used to restore damaged teeth.
If you have cracked, chipped, or badly worn teeth, crowns may be just the option for you. Crowns are often referred to as caps. The existing tooth is reshaped, removing the damaged or diseased portion, and a crown shaped to resemble a real tooth is placed over the top.
Crowns are also used when a patient has a root canal. Instead of crowns being fully made of porcelain or gold, crowns today can be made from a new ceramic material making the ceramic porcelain stronger. These can be done in one to two visits. The crowns from Progressive Dental will greatly improve your smile.
Bridges are exactly as they sound, they bridge the gaps left by missing teeth. A bridge uses two crowns that bookend a false tooth. These false teeth can be made from several different alloys and are called pontiffs.
There are several types of bridges available. Houston dentist Ellen Lim of Progressive Dental will help you make the right decision based on your needs.
Types of dental bridges:
Traditional bridges are the most common. A crown is made for the tooth (or implant) on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic (false tooth) in between. The material used is either porcelain fused to metal or ceramic.
Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth (or teeth). The process and materials are similar to those used in traditional bridges.
Maryland bonded bridges are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework, Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the existing teeth on either side.
Zirconia bridges are made from Zirconium oxide, an extremely tough dental ceramic. Compared to conventional bridges, there is less tooth sensitivity, no gray discoloration around the edge of the gums, and no problems with allergic reactions.
