In 2014 it was suggested that there was an estimate of over 46,000 Americans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in addition nearly 40,000 there was no symptoms in the beginning. This is along with there are no beginning symptoms and no routine screening test for this type of cancer. However there may be a way that a person’s oral health may help connect the possible risk of pancreatic cancer
Researchers have may have a finding that could lead to earlier and more precise treatments for this type of cancer. The study in which researchers wanted to show that there is two bacteria in the mouth that increases the risk for pancreatic cancer. In this study there was a total of 732 individuals that were involved there was 361 American men and women before they developed pancreatic cancer along with 371 someone individuals who did not have did not develop the disease.
In the group’s they were comparing the mouth bacteria in which they sampled in each group. The same individuals were part of an ongoing study in which lasted 10 years they were given mouthwash samples when they joined during the ten years it was to be noted if the individuals were diagnosed with any type of cancer.
When these results were analyzed it was found that the individuals whose mouth contains either of the two certain types of bacteria had higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared to those who had no evidence of the microorganisms.
The two bacterias that were found were porphyromonas and aggregatibacteractinomycetemcomitans. Porphyromonas gingivalis was linked to 59% overall higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Similarly, Aggregatibacteractinomycetemcomitans was linked to a 50% overall higher risk. Please type of bacteria are known to be associated with gum disease or periodontitis.
These figures did not change when researchers took out individuals who were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the two years following collection of the samples however this did reduce the chance that the figures were influenced by “reverse causation” in which the presence of the king of cancer proceeding the presence of the two bacterias.
